EDIT: For now I’m discontinuing this project until I can get a better idea of what I want to get from it. Check back soon. - Tony
This is the first “serious” project that I’m putting into action, so the tone of this post will be somewhat serious as well. The subject of this project is exactly how it sounds. I’m asking businesses to sponsor my college courses for the Spring semester.
Sponsor My College Courses
The Plan: To ask businesses and websites to sponsor each of my college courses for the Spring semester at $500 for each course. Since I have 5 courses this semester, I intend to generate $2,500.
Startup Cost: Free
Materials Needed: Web domain and hosting
What I did:
A more accurate phrase at this point would be “what I’m doing.”
I’ve created a web page, which I will probably make the welcome page of my site, with a list of my courses for next semester. For $500, a business can “sponsor” a course for that semester. They will get a banner (468X60) of their own design, which will be linkable to their website. There will only be one sponsor per course, so I’m only looking for 5 sponsors for this project.
To make this project more interesting, there’s a twist: I’ll only be allowed to keep all $500 for a course IF I make an A for that course. Each successive letter grade will result in a deduction of 25% of the payment. So for each letter grade I will get to keep:
A = 100% or $500
B = 75% or $375
C = 50% or $250
D = 25% or $125
F = 0% or $ 0
There are a few reasons for this caveat. It will keep the focus of this project on my academics, it keeps me accountable for the money I’m receiving, it makes things more interesting, and lastly, it gives me some motivation to get good grades!
I’ve debated on what to do if I lose the money. I thought about returning it to the sponsor, but that seems to imply that the sponsor would be “betting” against me in a way. Although that sounds interesting, I don’t want to go there at this point. So instead, I’ll donate the difference at the end of the semester (if I don’t get a 4.0) to charity. I’ll most likely put a poll up towards the end of the semester and let visitors to my site vote on the charity to donate too.
Why should you or anybody give me this much money? Because it’s a worthy investment :). I believe the return on this investment will be very high. I have a lot of interesting ideas, and this site will generate a significant amount of traffic in the next few months, based on this project and others. Sponsoring a college student will boost your company’s image as a charitable organization, while generating free advertising for your company.
The exact time frame these ads will remain up is from the time of purchase until May 31, 2008.
If you are interested, serious inquiries can be sent to me here. Please give me the name of the class you’d like to sponsor (if you have a preference,) along with a brief summary of your business or website, and a link to your page.
This is my first major project for this site. What I’m trying to demonstrate is the power we all have to take control of our financial situation. Help me do this. Bookmark this page, send it to friends, post on your blog, digg it, stumble it, talk about it.
Thanks
Tony
